Spring is finally here! The windows are open and the air in your home is smelling cleaner and fresher. Unfortunately, the carpet still has a funky odor acquired during winter. Don’t worry, Freeman Carpet Cleaning is here to help with a homemade carpet freshening recipe! This recipe is both non-toxic and completely customizable.
Non-toxic Carpet Freshener Recipe
First, combine 1 cup Baking Soda and ½ cup of Cornstarch in a zip close baggie.
If you prefer not to add a fragrance, you are done. If looking to add a fresh scent to your home, read on.
Add up to 30 drops of your favorite essential oil. More oil will provide a stronger scent, less oil will provide a more subtle scent. Any oil will work but lemongrass, lavender, and orange oils are especially helpful in adding a clean fresh scent and feeling to your home. You can even use lavender flowers, peppermint or spearmint leaves from your garden. Have fun with this step! It’s all about your own preference and style.
Let the mixture sit for a day or two so that the baking soda can fully absorb the essential oil.
Sprinkle the mixture on your carpet. A good trick to make application easier is to reuse a parmesan cheese container to store your carpet deodorizer. Let sit on the carpet at least 30 minutes or even overnight for carpets with stronger odors.
Vacuum and voilà, your carpet is smelling beautiful, refreshed, and ready for spring!
Pet owners, we have one more trick just for you! Any chance your beloved furry friend might have brought fleas onto your carpet? Its ok, we won’t tell. The above recipe is easily adapted to a flea removal tool. Mix baking soda and cornstarch together as described above, then add eucalyptus or citronella oil. These oils will get the fleas hiding in any carpet moving which makes it easy to vacuum them. Simply apply the carpet freshener and vacuum immediately after application. Be sure to empty your vacuum bag or canister as soon as you are finished and say goodbye to fleas!
