white-grey-catOne of the challenges of pet ownership is pet carpet stains.  Whether it’s a new puppy or kitten, or an older animal that has made a mistake, pet urine stains can be an embarrassing problem.  At Freeman Carpet Cleaning, we understand the stress of pet carpet stains and would like to share some cleanup tips with you.

If you notice the stain when fresh, it is important to begin cleanup efforts immediately.  First, try to absorb as much of the urine as possible using paper towels.  Keep applying paper towels and pressing gently, continuing with fresh paper towels as towels become saturated.  Next, rinse the affected carpet area with clean, cool water.  Remove the rinse water by using a wet vacuum if possible; otherwise the area can be dried by blotting with towels.

Do not use steam cleaners as the steam can permanently set the stain into your carpet.

There are also a few household products that can be effective in treating pet carpet stains:

  • White Vinegar is an excellent cleaning product.  Pour white vinegar directly onto the stain and allow it to soak in for a couple of minutes.  Blot the vinegar dry.  DO NOT RUB.  Rubbing can push the stain deeper into the carpet.
  • Baking Soda is great for cleaning and neutralizing smell.  Coat the entire area of the carpet affected with baking soda.  Let the baking soda sit on the carpet for a few hours, or better yet overnight.  You can vacuum out the stain and baking soda.
  • Salt can be used to absorb pet stains.  After removing solid material, cover the affected area of the carpet generously with salt.  Place a towel over the salt and let sit for two hours.  Stain should absorb and you can vacuum out the stain and the salt when finished.
