Spilling cocktailClean, comfortable, high quality furniture is the key to creating a warm inviting living room space for spending time with friends and family.  In fact, your family room is likely to be the most popular spot in your house.  Inevitably, this high traffic area of your home is going to be the scene for spills.  The professionals at Freeman Carpet Cleaning would like to share some of our favorite upholstery stain cleaning tips with you.

Homemade Stain Cleaners:

Ammonia:  Combine 1 TB clear ammonia mixed with 1 cup water in spray bottle

Detergent:  Combine ½ tsp mild dishwashing liquid with 2 cups water in spray bottle

Vinegar:  Combine 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water in spray bottle

Have a supply of cloths to use with these cleaners.  Remember to blot stains rather than to rub as rubbing can set the stain deeper into your furniture’s fabric.

The Stains:

Coffee or Tea: First spray with vinegar solution.  Blot with a damp cloth.  Then spray with the ammonia solution.  Blot with damp cloth.  Finish by blotting with a dry cloth.

Dirt/Mud:  First, let the dirt and mud dry for easier removal.  Then spray with detergent solution.  Blot with a damp cloth.  Blot with a dry cloth.

Juice/Soda:  Spray detergent solution first.  Blot with damp cloth.  Next spray ammonia solution.  Blot with damp cloth.  Spray vinegar solution to finish.  Blot with a damp cloth.  Pat dry with dry cloths.

Wine:  Blot first with water.  If stain persists, spray detergent solution.  Blot with damp cloth.  3% hydrogen peroxide is useful in trying to remove the color from red wine.
